Well done, I have goosebumps. More people need to stop believing everything they hear, and anything the feel, truly questions their own opinions and start over. It’s not too late.
Tim Wise is ironically using the very plan he argues against to divide and conquer based on class instead of race. Either way its wrong. Once again encouraging people to come to rely on the government instead of themselves. Racism is worse than classism but classism is still evil.
It never ceases to amaze me, to what lengths one will go to cherry pick historical fact to support some back seat driven opinion, of history. This guy is full of mega amounts of shit. How much did he charge these poor people to listen to his lecture?
Carlos isn’t really that far off. How does Tim Wise explain racism in other countries where nobody is “white”? I’ve witnessed it in Ecuador. In fact, I heard people there refer to lighter-colored Ecuadorians as colorado (colored).
I freely acknowledge that racism is alive and well in America. Institutions have an inertia that is difficult to change. But we’d be idiots to suggest that no progress has been made. No, it isn’t enough, but it does take generations to change this kind of thinking.
To Gary: I agree that Elitists are condescending immoral idiots. However, not everyone who is in a secure financial situation got there by screwing other people. I am not a “white” American, but my wife and I do just fine, but I never received (nor applied for) help from the federal government, or any other funds-dispersing agency based on race. While our country has a long way to go to get it right, there are many opportunities for everyone. If people are touched by Tim Wise’s comments, the best thing they can do is show others how many opportunities are available to them. You know, actually help people. Feeling touched by someone else’s comments doesn’t change anything. Action does.
Userlicious: Truth is not endless. There is Truth, period. Postmodern bull**** is what got us into this situation in the first place. Understanding Reality with an uppercase ‘R’ is what will get us out of the mess.
About 1% of southerns actually owned slaves. Btw its funny that he’s preaching with the mannerisms of a black preacher hahah. This dude needs to read a history book of Brazil. The United States was slave paradise compared to that place.
“This dude needs to read a history book of Brazil. The United States was slave paradise compared to that place.”
I can’t stand when people soften the blow of the US’s wrong-doings by comparing them to another country’s. Maybe Brazilian slavery was more brutal than the United States, but at the end of the fucking day what Brazil did does not nullify what the US has done. They’re two separate instances and should be treated as such.
Amadeus, your comment so reeks of US jingoism that it made me projectile vomit onto my computer monitor. Thx.
And T, I don’t believe he is explaining other countries. In fact, I’m willing to say each country has a different historical context for that country’s racism (though, I am of the opinion, especially in a country like Ecuador whose gap between the rich and poor is far wider than the US, the same classist thread probably runs throughout those histories).
Tim Wise has put into words a theory I had been contemplating for a while now; It’s good to know as a white-male American, I’m not the only one thinking about these things. United we stand, divided we fucking fall.
This is really good, however, he fails to notice that racism isn’t just a white issue. Black people hate white people just as much as white people hate black people - we’re all human. That’s my only bone of contention. I think he has a lot of good ideas but to say that the black people across the canal have been “perfectly willing for years” to work with the white folk is simply false.
Obviously, the racism against white people has been incurred by years of mistreatment, but stereotyping a whole race of people based on the color of their skin is still racism and still unjustified.
He’s blaming white people entirely. While it may be mainly the fault of white people he needs to realize the role of other races in perpetuating racism.
Wise is historically accurate when referring to the division of slaves and indentured servants and the creation of “whiteness”. He is not trying to condemn the white race as a whole or divide people by class, he is simply explaining history and how it tends to repeat itself and how we need to acknowledge these things so they don’t happen again.
But you know what? I’m simply going to give him props because he seems to be a freaking amazing public speaker; His articulation and the delivery of his message were both very, VERY well done. He’s even got everyone fuming now.
Shnike: Sorry whites did not invent slavery or racism, you will find its existence in Africa long before anyone from Europe showed up. There is not “majority” of blame to assign to anyone.
Th Civil War was about States rights. The North wanted to end Slavery because the poor white population would riot in the metro areas, the writing was on the wall. Slavery was bad and it would have gone extinct here as it did in Great Britain. In GB they did it smart, unlike the Union saying “Congratulations your free! and doing little or nothing to educate and acclimate them, they sure wernt very welcome (to say the least) up north. After all the north is where all the importers of slaves lived.
Actually, this was more about the commonality of economic class than a history lesson on slavery, and most of the posters here seemed to miss the point. Color is skin deep, class goes straight to the bone. Tim Wise’s message is simple, we only got one boat. So we can keep fighting over the seats, or we can all start rowing.
I have to agree with Stovepipe. The “whiteness” that is referred to is not about color or race but about separating a group based on some arbitrary factor to make them more easy to control.
What many of you are not seeing is that divide and conquer has many different translations. Just because there is racism in countries with no white people doesn’t mean that its not still the same idea of pitting the poor against each other. And you think that dividing the poor against the rich is bad? Well then you must be rich. Class is a problem and people who have no economic privilege know that.In the end, the civil war WAS about slavery (I have a PhD (on scholarship) in history so don’t try to rebut that unless you’re smart enough), the state’s right to keep slavery and it was, in fact, not a tactic to cause riots among the poor whites because they didn’t own any slaves. Rich people can delude themselves that they are innocent, but in the end, rich people can only get rich through exploitation. . .
Oh, and everyone knows that whites didn’t invent racism. Quit getting defensive and own up to this human problem. . . If you’ve got white guilt, it shows a lot when a video like this, which never assigns white blame, can get you to go straight to the argument of, “other races did it too!”, what, are you 12?
Classism is evil? I don’t understand, Chris. Classism is a natural byproduct of capitalism. Racism is manufactured, by people with money and power, who want more money and power. This shit isn’t real, its just pounded into our heads like it’s supposed to mean anything. Just like the Palistinian conflict, there isn’t a real racial conflict. The real problem is economic, as it always is.
ok, maybe i’m the one missing the point, but this clip is NOT about racism and whether the US is worse than other places. It is about how the wealthy ruling class has used people’s ability to be racist to subvert the poor working class’s interests for their own gain. This video is not merely a sweeping generalization against the wealthy and, therefore, is not an example of class-ist propaganda. There has and likely always will be powerful groups of property owners who work behind the scenes to direct public opinion and policy towards their own best interests. You can get mad at post-modernists and revisionists all you like, but this is a simple fact and shouldn’t surprise anyone.
It bugs the hell out of me when people say, ’slavery existed in Africa for thousands of years- it isn’t our fault’. In reality, the word ’slave’ is pretty deceptive. Being a ’slave’ in Africa generally meant domestic labor or serfdom, as opposed to plantation labor. Slaves in West Africa could not usually be sold, and their children would almost never remain slaves. The idea of importing a population to serve as hereditary chattel slaves who had no rights, could be freely sold and whose physical appearance marked them as slaves, was an invention of colonialism. Rarely, if ever, before in history had a group of people been treated this way. Check out Walter Rodney’s article “African Slavery and Other Forms of Social Oppression”.
“Tim Wise is ironically using the very plan he argues against to divide and conquer based on class instead of race. Either way its wrong. Once again encouraging people to come to rely on the government instead of themselves. Racism is worse than classism but classism is still evil.”
Good point, and yeah this guy is a brilliant speaker.
This is a great speech and clears up the BS we’ve been brainwashed to believe, using blacks as a scapegoat, this should WAKE AMERICA UP
IT’S THE ELITE NOT BLACKS,MEXICANS,HISPANICS,ASIANS. Why didn’t CNN or one of the major news stations cover this?
teacrimes- forgetting the jews in egypt? hammurabi’s code? concubines and sex slave throughout history around the world? the idea of owning a person didn’t start in the colonies.
What people don’t realize is that this is NOT a clip about racism. choosing skin tone as a dividing factor is just as arbitrary as picking hair color. why weren’t blonds slaves?
What this is really about is how the elites tricked the working class whites into thinking that they were more like the elitists than the working class blacks. for those of you who still don’t get it, here’s a chart:
Group1.
Trait A:Working class
Trait B:Black
Group2.
Trait A: working class
Trait B: White
Group 3.
Trait A:Elite
Trait B:White
All that this clip is about is how Group 3 convinced Group 1 and Group 2 that Trait B is more important than Trait A.
The idea of hating those different than yourself did not start in America. It’s human nature and has been around since the dawn of man. that’s why Europe was in such turmoil, such as Tim described at the beginning of the clip. Group 3 knew that. and they just tried to make themselves seem similar to one of the groups, and alienate the other. If they let groups 1 and 2 think that trait A was more important, they would be outnumbered. but by tricking them, they maintained control.
the speaker’s largely right, more than half. (that’s better than any political party i can think of)
the sad side of all this history and all history is that humankind somehow cannot sort itself out; we appear to have potential but no real ability to get it finally right. from earliest recorded times till now it’s just variations on the same bumbling theme. seems we need an external force to turn us toward what’s important. maybe obiwan kenobi or Jesus will come open the golden-eden-garden gate for us. there in lies the best hope for the likes of us.
“He failed to mention”
“He didn’t get the whole story”
Dude, it’s a fucking 10 minute clip of what was possibly a few hours long lecture. I’m sure he has done a great amount of research on the issue and knows damn well what he’s talking about. Totally abandoning his ideas based on the fact that you’ve been conditioned to believe something different is very stupid. Basically, we don’t have all of the information to accept or reject his statements based solely on this video. Of course there are a lot of historical aspects, but with only 10 minutes, he got to the point and said enough to keep the people thinking. He’s done his research and the message is good and accurate. He’s not saying “rich white people are bad” as much as you might think he’s saying it. What he’s saying is “those who seek power through race are doing a wrong and race is really not the issue, the issue is maintaining power and wealth.”
This talk reminded me of a favorite book. Killers of the Dream, by Lillian Smith, first published in 1949, remains the most eloquent piece of truth-telling about the use of race to divide natural allies that I have ever come across. In describing the South in which she, a privileged White woman, was raised, Smith brings into clear relief many of the dishonest psychological tricks embedded in American society, even today, that keep the rabble in its place, duped into acting against its own best self-interests. Beautiful prose, as relevant today as it was when segregation was a fiercely defended way of life.
People are scared of those who are different and watch out for their own kind. It’s evolution, survival instinct. It causes a shit ton of problems tho.
this video is just a rant based on loosely connected facts, and with no sources for those facts. i couldn’t take it seriuosly, and it wasnt pursuasive at all. If you a trying to persuade someone into believing what you think, you shouldnt undermine your argument with loaded lanuage and sweeping statements.
I’m sorry but regardless of whether this man has actual historical evidence of this, what he is saying is correct. People need to stop being selfish, and learn to accept people for who they are, not what they look like. And to “wow”, your comment sounded an awful lot like the way you explained his speech, hypocrite!
This is the 1st time i heard him i thank God i did. I am sooooo
touched my this for i know this to be true. I am married to a white
man and have 2 step daughers white also and they have white friends
that come to our house, they are the most arrogant and disrespectful
people i ever seen they have been taught they are better than i am
and my hubby i now see is even more arrogant and do mean things to
and at people and feel he has a right. They act as though i am not
important because they are white but at the same time they seem to
be intimidated by me and my respect for others and the way i carry
myself with dinity they do not have a ounce of caring or remorse
for their evil actions. I will order this DVD today this is all
true and (just so happened to been left out of the white/black
history this need to brocast to every single person on earth.
One of my stepdaughters reached out to me i do not know when but
i am grateful she put her arms around me and hugged me and said
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY she bought me a BIRTHDAY CAKE from her own heart
at Christmas i mention a certain perfume and she bought it for me
this acts of kindess does not go unnoticed by God. She touched my
heart in more ways that she will ever know i am black and just so
happen to be her dads wife, her stepmom. I do pray for them.

Are you kidding Carlos?
Elitists care for themselves and keep everyone else preoccupied so that we don’t notice that they have everything and we have very little.
Woah……… Carlos is really dumb. Wake up man, truth is endless, it’s one big fucking cherry tree. What linear lie are you living in?
